How We Work (isn’t working)

Powered by data from CivicScience, the idealis team captured the pulse from over 200,000 U.S. workers reflective of the entire U.S. workforce to understand how we work, and if it is working.

The Quarterly Pulse of the U.S. Workforce report, “How We Work (isn’t working), highlights patterns of workplace preferences and the experiences of workers who work in different ways across industries, demographics, and geographies across the U.S.

The findings from the report indicate that workplace preferences have been unstable over time, and preferences are nearly evenly split: 36% of U.S. workers prefer to work fully in-person, 31% prefer hybrid working, and 34% prefer remote working. This does not tie to how these individuals work - with many U.S. workers feeling dissatisfied with their current work modality.

‍As organizations and leaders grapple with the ‘right’ approach to working at work, idealis’ research reveals a significant insight: U.S. workers who prefer to work full-time in an office trust their CEO and admire their leader more than workers who work remotely. (CEO trust: 65% for in-person, 51% for remote); and (Leader Admiration: 61% for in-person, 50% for remote). ‍The in-person experience of work also has several benefits to the workplace experience, even for those who don’t prefer to come into the office (but are expected to).

This report answers a question that is top of mind for most executive teams: How can we motivate U.S. workers to be optimally productive and high performing? Do different workers have different workplace preferences that need to be understood? Does proximity build trust? Do leaders need to step up to help make the ‘in office experience’ a preference for more workers?

Download the full report to get insights on how to re-engage your workers in the office alongside other recommendations for executive teams. The full report will help you to understand what’s really driving the workplace experience for workers of all types, and how you can enhance workplace culture and performance.

Never miss an insight.
