The Elephant (and Donkey) in the Room: Talking Politics at Work

idealis.’ Q1 Pulse of the U.S. Workforce sheds light on a topic that is being experienced by workers and leaders all across workplaces in the U.S. Powered by data from CivicScience, the report features responses from over 220,000 U.S. workers, and explores how talking politics at work has become increasingly common (and contentious) for many workplaces across America.

The quarterly research report explores the intersection of political identity and employee experience, grounded in over six months of data collected at a pivotal time in U.S. history. With representation from all political parties, preferences and backgrounds, the Pulse report reinforces the general sentiment of leaders we work with: workplace cultures and experiences can be deeply influenced by political outcomes in society.

Among the many takeaways, one stands out: over half of U.S. workers express concern over the impact of conversations about politics at work. The report also uncovers how these concerns differ by age and race, and vary based on where people work (in an office, at home, or a hybrid mix).

Another key finding from the research: leaders are the most concerned of all and are feeling the heat: 67% of managers agree that political discussions hurt productivity, but few feel equipped to lead through tricky political terrain. The impact of talking politics at work is felt in company cultures and seen in company performance.

Against an increasingly treacherous political landscape, and with most companies employing workers across a spectrum of political views, the data also points to a powerful, unexpected insight about which political group reports the most positive work experiences, and why that might be.

If your workforce looks anything like the U.S. population - polarized in their views and charged in their rhetoric, you’ll want to read the full report to understand how politics play a role at work, and why addressing the elephant (and donkey) in the room is critical to workplace culture and performance.
